Ageing worries start at 29
APPARENTLY women start worrying about getting older and the physical signs of ageing in their 20's. According to new research a woman's battle to grow old gracefully begins from the age of 29, which means celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Miranda Kerr, both 29, could already be stressing about wrinkles, age spots and weight gain. Superdrug conducted the study of 2,000 women which found a third of them say a sagging bottom keeps them awake at night, while 29 per cent want to avoid a wrinkly cleavage at all costs. More than one in ten women said they feel they look older ...
Good night, sleep tight
INSOMNIA affects about 30 per cent of the British population. With over 12 million prescriptions for sleeping pills written every year, this costs the UK's NHS £36 million. However, there are things that can be done to help nod off into a peaceful night's sleep without reaching for the pills: - Cognitive behavioural therapy. This is a type of psychotherapy that can help change the way you think and behave, overcoming negative beliefs about sleep. More than 100 clinical trials have shown that it is the most effective long-term solution for insomnia. - Wake up gradually. With mornings becoming darker, by the day ...
An apple a day …
AN apple a day may not just keep the doctor away, but the cardiologist too. A new study suggests that eating apples each day could significantly improve the health of hearts in middle aged adults in just one month. Eating an apple each day over four weeks lowered 'bad' cholesterol in the blood by 40 per cent - a substance which is linked to the hardening of the arteries and heart problems.
Get the beauty bug
THE good bacteria in ones skin are essential for the immune system, just like it is for the gut. Upping them can also combat wrinkles, sagging and pigmentation, restoring your complexion’s youthful plumpness and glow, studies suggest. The beneficial bugs on the surface of the skin work to maintain moisture and radiance and fight the bad bacteria which cause redness, sensitivity, spots and other infections. Good bacteria penetrate the deeper levels to repair skin DNA and build wrinkle-preventing collagen. This probiotic reduced cellular damage by up to 50 per cent, irritation by up to 35 per cent and activated cellular renewal by ...
Sperm made from human skin
EARLY-STAGE sperm has been successfully made from human skin tissue. Thousands of infertile men could be potentially helped by this technique. Using sperm ‘grown’ from slivers of their skin could allow them to father children genetically their own. It could also lead to a ‘miracle pill’ to treat infertility. American scientists from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine used a cocktail of chemicals to wind back the ‘biological clock’ in skin cells, turning them into ones with the chameleon-like powers of embryonic stem cells. Critics argue it is wrong to meddle with the building blocks of life, warning of a future where ...
