What Can be Done
At best and if caught early enough, simple life style changes may halt and reverse any abnormality and at worst and again if caught early enough, you are given and will have choices in what to do.

There is no comparison or competition between Thermal Imaging and the traditional mammogram, both “looking” for different things but surely, screening that is 100% safe and can “see” abnormalities at their earliest stages rather than lump detection is where we should be focusing?

Acupuncture has earned a good reputation thanks to thousands of patients who have found an answer to their aches and pains, whether it be back, head, shoulders, nerves, sciatica or any other ailments that affect humans. Many of them had previously been unable to find a solution in conventional treatment, so this, and the history of medicine which has been practised in the same way for thousands of years with excellent results, support the effectiveness of acupuncture.

However, despite its effectiveness in treating multiple ailments and the fact that it is recommended by an increasing number of doctors and health care professionals, there are still doubts about whether it truly works.

In Germany, the Federal Committee of Doctors and health insurance companies have carried out a project to determine, via clinical trials, its value in treating migraine, osteoarthritis, and back pains. It has become increasingly popular in Germany and many insurance companies cover expenses for acupuncture treatment. The study, which was carried out with 900 patients, has concluded with results that suggest that patients with chronic pain benefit significantly from acupuncture, although the results depend on factors other than the correct placement of the needles, according to Klaus Linde, one of the researchers. Imagine if, however, you got back into the car, paused, and went to check again. Then you got back into the car, drove a few yards, stopped and went back to check yet again. That´s a short description of obsessive compulsive behaviour. What a terrible position to be in – it´s easy to see how this sort of behaviour could seriously interfere with one´s normal enjoyment of life.

Like many emotional states, OCD (we´ll call it that from now on), is simply a normal protective mechanism taken to an extreme. To check that the kettle is off is merely sensible, but to do it three or four times in the space of minutes is to say the least unusual.

There are two common strands observable in OCD, and these are:

1. repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to self-imposed rules that must be applied rigidly
2. the behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive.

It is also notable that the person is aware that the behaviour is bizarre, although naturally, we cannot expect this to be the case in young children. OCD can start at any age, but for the most part, it begins to show itself between the ages of 10 and 24. The gender prevalence of OCD is equal in males and females. However, childhood-onset OCD is more common in males and more likely to be linked genetically with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette syndrome.

What causes OCD? Fact is, nobody really knows. A family history of similar complaints is sometimes found, and it has been suggested that OCD can be triggered by infection with bacteria of the streptococcus family. Because treatment with SSRI drugs (usually used in the treatment of depression) have been effective in treating OCD, there is also a suggestion that it may have to do with the balance of the neuro-transmitter serotonin in the brain. The jury is, though, still out.

In diagnosing OCD, the following common factors are often noted:

Common obsessions include the following:

• Fear of Contamination
• Over concern about safety
• Doubting one’s memory or perception
• Scrupulosity (need to do the right thing, fear of committing a transgression, often religious)
• Need for order or symmetry

Common compulsions include the following:

• Cleaning/washing
• Checking (checking locks, stove, iron, safety of children)
• Counting/repeating actions a certain number of times or until it feels right
• Arranging objects
• Touching/tapping objects
• Hoarding

So what can be done about it? The best approach is usually twofold – prescription by a GP of a suitable medication, together with the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

CBT utilises techniques of exposure and response prevention, meaning exposure to symptom triggers of gradually increasing intensity, with use of cognitive and relaxation techniques including hypnosis (if the therapist is suitably qualified) to suppress the obsessive or compulsive response.

Response is usually quite fast, and treatment is effective.
